A Slice of Vegas

Pizza! Pizza! Pizza! If you don’t love pizza, you’re not human. Period. At one point, I think pizza was almost everyone’s favorite food as a child, and many have still hung on into adulthood. Pizza is perfect. Simple, but perfect. It’s just bread, sauce, and toppings, yet sooooo addictive and scrumptious. There’s many different styles and types of pizza from Neapolitan, Roman, Deep-Dish, to New York Style pies. The coasts have been “kings” when it comes to killer pizza pies, but Las Vegas can join the club of being one hell of a pizza destination city. Here are a few local pizza joints in Las Vegas featuring some insanely good pizza. Mangiare (eat in Italian)!!

Dom Demarco’s

“Domenico DeMarco is the legendary founder of Di Fara Pizza; a restaurant with a storied Brooklyn, New York history that spans over 45 years and the #1 Zagat Rated New York City Pizza for eight years.” And now, his made-from-scratch pies can be enjoyed right here in Vegas. Dom Demarco’s serves up two different styles of pie, round and square. The round pie was made famous at the legendary Di Fara in Brooklyn, and the square is a Sicilian style that has won the hearts of many pizza lovers. “Each pizza is made with hand crushed San Marzano tomato sauce, the finest mozzarella & grana padano cheeses, hand cut basil, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), and baked well done to achieve Di Fara’s signature crust – the same way Dom has been doing it for over forty years.” Dom’s also serves up craft beer, wine, and killer cocktails to go with the famous “The Di Fara Special” ($17 half or $26 full) a square, red pie with hand-cut pepperoni, fresh & aged mozzarella, grana padano, fresh basil, EVOO – a NYC legend that is served Brooklyn Style with the edges charred. Dom’s pizza is the real deal. 9785 W Charleston Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89117 702.570.7000 www.domdemarcos.com

When Settebello first opened in Henderson, it changed lives. How can pizza that cooks in just 60 seconds taste like heaven? Settebello specializes in Neopolitan style pie just like the way they eat in Naples, Italy. Pizza Napoletana is made with a soft dough and takes about one minute to cook in a blistering hot wood-burning oven, which gives it distinct characteristics such as the char spots on the crust and the sweet smell of the hot San Marzano tomato sauce with fresh basil and bubbling cheese. Must gets are the classic “Margherita DOC” (Crushed Tomatoes, Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella, Basil, Parmigiano Reggiano, Extra Virgin Olive Oil), the “Settebello” (Crushed Tomatoes, Pancetta, Wood Oven Sausage, Roasted Mushrooms, Toasted Pine Nuts, Mozzarella, Basil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil), and the “Vico” (Wood Oven Sausage, Sauteed Fennel, Red Onions, Mascarpone, Mozzarella, Basil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil). They also serve up amazing wines by the glass and Italian craft beers to compliment their work of art pies. 140 S Green Valley Pkwy, Henderson, NV 89012 702.222.3556 www.settebello.net

Those Guys Pies

If you live in Vegas or have ever been drunk at The Cosmopolitan at 2am, chances are you’ve ended up eating at the famous not-so “Secret Pizzeria” tucked in a hallway at The Cosmo. One of the guys behind The Cosmo spot, Chef Roy Bass, has now ventured off the strip to a little shop in The Lakes featuring killer pizza pie (takeout or delivery only). Literally some of the best in the city, I promise. Those Guys Pies serves up New York style pizza, cheesesteaks, wings, fingers, salads, and great sandwiches. They even make their own bacon and meatballs from scratch (meat lovers rejoice). Back to the pizza…It’s really that good. Some standouts are definitely “The Big Sexy” (sausage, pepperoni, garlic, onion, pepperoncini), their famous “White Pie” (Ricotta, Mozzerella, Garlic) which is the one of the best white pizzas you’ll ever eat and the “Cheesesteak Pie” (Ribeye, Mushroom, Bell Peppers, Onions, American Cheese on a red or white pie). Those Guys Pies is the perfect example of grabbing a stellar east coast slice in Vegas. 2916 Lake E Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89117 702.629.2626 www.thoseguyspies.com

Pop Up Pizza

Pop Up Pizza resides in the heart of Downtown Las Vegas inside the Plaza Hotel and features downtown themed pies using only market-fresh ingredients. They even feature a vegan pizza that is worth eating if you’re the meatiest of meat eaters (yes, the cheese is vegan mozzarella). You can order whole pies or grab a few different slices to sample. They fly their cheese in from Wisconsin and pepperoni from Chicago, making their pies even more dreamy. I don’t know how they do it, but this pizza has the perfect amount of crunch when you bite into it. I know it sounds silly, but this is something very serious when dealing with thin New York style pies. Must orders are the “The 18b” (Classic whole milk mozzarella cheese pie with the perfect crunch), “The Goodman” (Mozzarella, caramelized onions, roasted mushrooms, spinach, and red potato), “The Soho” (Vegan mozzarella, spinach, mushrooms, artichoke, and roasted bell peppers), and “The Plaza” (White pie with mozzarella and ricotta cheese, roasted red bell peppers and Italian sausage). Writing about these pies just made my mouth water, they’re that good. 1 S Main St, Las Vegas, NV 89101 702.366.0049 www.popuppizzalv.com

Chef Marc Sgrizzi takes his pizza creating very seriously. Each one of his Neapolitan pies is truly a work of art. If a pie doesn’t meet his standard of excellence out of the 900 degree wood-fired brick oven, it’s going in the trash and he’s going to make another one. It’s the love and attention to detail like this that has ‘zah goers raving about his crafted pies. For a pie to be considered Neapolitan, it has to follow a few strict guidelines such as using San Marzano tomatoes from Napoli, Caputo “00” flour and mozzarella from Campania, Italy. Novecento’s concept isn’t your ordinary pizza concept, though. I hate to use this reference, but think Chipotle, but for Neapolitan pizza. You walk up to the counter, choose your sauce and pick from a variety of toppings, and then they throw it their blazing hot oven for 90 seconds, rotating it slightly to get a perfect char. They also serve up ice cold Peroni on draft as well as other bottled beers and wines. Once you taste one of Chef Marc’s pies, I can promise you it won’t be your last. 9460 South Eastern Ave. Henderson, NV 89123 702.485.2900 www.novecentopizza.com
